07:37 pm - Potential New Teacher...
Hi all!
Just found this community on lj and am very excited to get to see comments from current teachers about the profession. I was wondering if I could get some insiders advice...

I'm applying to grad school for next fall, and the plan is to get a MA in History and then a MA in Education to be certified to teach social studies at the secondary school level. I just took the GRE and my scores were not where I wanted them to be (520 on verbal, 630 on quantitative). While the rest of my application is probably good enough to get me into most schools, I don't think those GRE scores are strong enough to secure funding. So, I had thought I could get the first MA paid for w/scholarships and assistantships, but if that's not the case I may only be able to afford to get one.

So, in order to be the most effective teacher, would you suggest a MA in History and then get certified another way, or would you go straight for the Masters in Education and get certified along the way? I want to go into teaching to teach about past inequalities and their historical backgrounds so that future generations are exposed to different ways of thinking and looking at these issues, and then maybe eventually these injustices will stop repeating themselves. (Note, I don't want to brainwash any kids as my friend told me when she asked why I wanted to go into teaching, I just want to be able to open up discussions about these issues and offer alternative views to the status quo). So I want to study history at the masters level to get a good foundation in history, especially race and gender history. But could I be just as effective of a teacher not having this academic background?

Any advice would be helpful :)

12:11 pm - dog licking herself constantly?
Sorry guys, I posted an entry last night and deleted it because I realized I wasn't asking what I really wanted to know. Here is what I wanted to know. And I know that going to a vet would be the best idea, I plan on going on Friday. I just spent $120 on her treatment for a bladder infection last week and a little short on cash, so I wanted to take her to the vet my family goes to back home since he is more reasonable on what he charges (yet still a very good, trustworthy vet). I am just hoping to have an idea of what it could be because it is driving both of us crazy.

My female Great Dane keeps licking her female parts and butt CONSTANTLY. It doesn't seem to be one or the other, but both. It seems to be more at night than during the day, but it does happen during the day too. She licks and chews on herself so much, it makes a nasty noise. I noticed what looks like flea bites on her belly, though her flea medicine wasn't ready to be put on again yet. I have noticed one or two fleas on her though. She was treated for a bladder infection and I thought she might have been licking herself during treatment because it still hurt her down there. But we finished treatment and it has only gotten worse. I let her sleep in my room with me (sometimes in bed with me if my husband is out of town) and it really gets annoying for me. I am sure it must be for her.

I am wondering what it could be? I really doubt she is in heat (she isn't spayed yet, but supposedly too young to be in heat and I am not noticing any discharge whatsoever). I thought it might be possible, so I asked last night other signs I should look for. But like I said, I really don't think that is it.

I read about anal gland issues and wondered if that might be it. She isn't scooting on the floor, but seems to be licking around her tail and butt a lot.

I was also wondering if her antibiotics didn't treat the bladder infection fully or if she developed a yeast infection or something else because of antibiotic usage (I thought I read that dogs can develop yeast infections too).

Any other ideas? Could it just be a habit and she is grooming herself that much? If so, is there a way to beak that habit? I am really stumped on this one. It doesn't seem to bother her greatly during the day. She acts normal otherwise.

04:25 pm - 8th grader behavior plan
I have one particular 8th grader that has horrible behavior. He often throws the class of track (not as an insult to me though) and his actions disrupt his classmates and they rebel against him.

His mother is involved and has often talked to him about his behavior and his lack of proper etiquette. I want to make some kind of chart or system for him but I have NEVER had to make one before. I don't know what to offer him as a prize. (A letter home, a sticker, a pencil, a homework pass, etc.)

Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

08:23 am - Self esteem
Hello fellow teachers!

I come to you for advice on self esteem projects for 1st/2nd graders. I had a 6 yr old come to me yesterday telling me that she doesn't like how she looks, she doesn't think she's special, etc. I had another 6 yr old (who overheard this other child speaking) tell me the same thing. I've done self-esteem builders/activities/lessons for preschoolers, but never for 1st/2nd graders. I have 10 children, aged 6-7. I'm googling it, but I can't come up with anything that I'm too fond of.
So ... I come to you for ideas.

TIA!

06:14 pm - Santa Fe Chicken
I made this for dinner tonight, along with some white rice and sour cream. It turned out wonderfully, so I figured I would share. I'll definitely be making it again!

Crock Pot Santa Fe Chicken
Courtesy Gina's Weight Watcher Recipes

Serves 8 / Points: 4.25 ww points

* 24 oz (1 1/2) lbs chicken breast
* 14.4 oz can diced tomatoes with mild green chile peppers
* 15 oz can black beans
* 8 oz frozen corn (I used canned, it worked just as well)
* 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
* 14.4 oz can fat free chicken broth
* 3 scallions, chopped
* 1 tsp garlic powder (I added extra before serving)
* 1 tsp onion powder (I added extra before serving)
* 1 tsp cumin
* 1 tsp cayenne pepper (to taste)
* salt to taste

Combine chicken broth, beans, corn, tomatoes, cilantro, scallions, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, cayenne pepper and salt in the crock pot. Season chicken breast with salt and lay on top. Cook on low for 10 hours or on high for 6 hours. Half hour before serving, remove chicken and shred. Return chicken to slow cooker and stir in. Adjust salt and seasoning. Serve over rice (extra pts).

I added some shredded sharp cheddar to each serving, along with a blob of sour cream. Yum! If you're not a rice fan, this would also go well with warmed tortillas, or on top of a baked potato. Taste-wise, it's a lot like chicken tortilla soup, but more hearty. Enjoy!

12:34 pm - Pain Perdu
Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for a really custardy pain perdu? I had a craving for it last night & made some baked french toast, but it didn't come out right. The leftovers are rock hard & I have them soaking in milk.
I usually think of regular french toast as something really yummy when it's hot, but that I choke on when it starts to cool & get tough. Is thicker bread the secret? I thought it might come out better if I did it in the crockpot.

05:51 pm - Dead Poet's Society
I have been looking for an opportunity to watch and discuss Dead Poet's Society in my 8th grade class. I wanted to show it in my health class when we talked about stress, mental health, and suicide. The idea was vetoed due to a lack of time.
This week we are reading "O Captain! My Captain!" and the urge is back.
I just need an extra shove to get me from "that would be nice" to "I'm doing it!"
Good experiences? Bad ones?
It's PG so I'm not planning to get permission.

05:31 pm - A parent story
My dear friend, my team Science teacher, was at 7-11 this morning indulging in a sandwich and hot cocoa. This woman literally lives hand to mouth, because her ex-husband doesn't take care of his financial responsibilities. Due to this, she does a TON of after school coaching to earn some money for their 3 kids. So, I literally mean indulge-- she saved up $5 over the last 2 weeks because she knew today was going to be a long day and she'd want a little pick me up.

There's a long line, and the parent behind her says, "Aren't you my son's honors science teacher? Didn't you graduate from Random Name High school in the 80's?" Turns out, they went to the same school 20 years ago, kinda knew similar people, yada yada. The line progresses: her in a hand-me-down dress and slippers, him in a sharp 3-piece suit. Finally, it gets to her turn in line and he says from behind her, "Great talking with ya, bud. Thanks for taking care of my coffee!" and. he. leaves.Dodges out the door before she can say anything In his tricked out Mercedes. So, there is my friend freaking out because she doesn't have a spare quarter to her name right now.

I gave her my lunch.

Now, our Touching Base day is Wednesday. I'll be interested to see if he comes in, and what she says.

Seriously, wtf? Parents...

02:15 am - Lots of Rice?
I love this community -- you've given me some seriously great advice. So now that my Mother has a question I can't answer, I'm passing it on to you: can we do a big batch of rice in a crock pot? We're going to be doing chinese food for about nine people, so we figure we need 9-10 cups of cooked rice. We're really not up for buying a rice cooker (since it would be used only about once every two years, and there is no more space in the cupboards for rarely used appliances), but we've got options when it comes to crocks (2, 4, or 6 qts); we'd even be happy enough to make it on the stove and store it in the crock to keep warm, if that's the only way to do this. I know it's possible to do smaller quantities of rice this way, but I haven't seen anyone post about doing so much, and I'm a little worried about how long before dinner we'll need to put it in.

The rest of the proposed menu is under here for the curious... )

01:01 pm - Boneless Pork Loin Center Cut Roast in my freezer... Recipe??
Looking for a crock pot recipe for the above item in my freezer. Although I think something with sweet potatoes or apples or fruit glazes would be good... my husband is not in the mood for a recipe with any sweet/sugary stuff. So please share any non-sweet recipe you have!

07:06 pm - Facebook in the Classroom
I want to have my students create Facebook pages as historical figures, then interact with each other via wall posts, notes, etc., and also create a profile for the historical figure, and photos, etc. I don't know if this is even possible. Is it? I know about the caution I will have to take re: digital citizenship. Has anyone ever done something like this?

07:33 pm - the Darkfall story
So, it was about two in the morning and I was reading this horror novel (review):

Imagine my surprise when I turned the page and found this:

Kind of creeped me out. And further on there was this:

What?

It was only sort of explained in the note I found:

01:44 pm - reader's theater
So my Americorps team and I are doing a literacy night themed around Roald Dahl and all his wonders. For part of getting kids excited about it we went in the intermediate classrooms and signed up 4th and 5th grade volunteers to do a readers theater from a selection of different novels. Since the school doesn't have funding for afterschool activities I proposed that the students would be sacrificing their lunch recess to practice. To my suprise, all but about 5 kids signed up.. from all classes.
So enough overview. I'm just a little overwhelmed and was wondering if anyone had advice for elementary readers theater? I know I'm not doing the "traditional" readers theater because the students have a few lines they will be saying. Along with actors, a narrator I'm also having students be "Set Crew" (which will most likely stick to simple props and maybe a background)
So other than keeping it simple, any advice for how to manage or make this a success? Also, if anyone has skits already.. please share! I've spent the last few days transcribing excerpts from: The Twits, George's Marvelous Medicine, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Magic Finger, B.F.G and James and the Giant Peach.

Thank you! I've been following this forum and it always has great ideas and stories!

12:24 am - Crock pot chicken experiment
I made chicken in the crock for dinner tonight - my son's request for his birthday dinner.  I did my usual thing - put some cut up carrots and onions in the crock and set a whole chicken on top. But I thought it seemed a bit boring - same old, same old, you know.  So I cut up an apple, stuffed half of it inside the chicken (it was a BIG apple) and put the rest around it.  (This turned out to be a VERY good idea because when stuffing the apple into the chicken, I discovered I'd forgotten to take out the giblet package... OOPS!)

Then I rubbed the chicken with some lemon juice and a bit of olive oil, and then I sprinkled paprika liberally over the whole thing.  I added a cup or so of water and a chicken stock cube (since I'm temporarily out of homemade) and cooked on low for about 8 hours or so.

I served it with a salad, noodles, and crusty french bread.  Somehow the apple and lemon juice really perked up the chicken.  And the paprika gave the skin a nice reddish brown color and some extra flavor.  My husband said the chicken tasted even nicer than usual, and my mom-in-law (who isn't really a huge chicken lover) even had seconds!  In fact, there is very little in the way of leftovers (which is both good and bad - I was rather counting on having enough leftover chicken and noodles to make a casserole for dinner tomorrow, darn it!)

09:40 am - Parent Teacher Interviews
Okay, so they are fast approaching for my School District in a couple weeks.

I was curious how yours are organized and how you prepare for them.

Ours are the night after report cards are issued from 7-9 and the following day from 8am-noon. We are a grade 7-12 school. Instead of being in our individual classrooms with specific times for specific parents, the grade 7-9 teachers are all set up in the gym and 10-12 in the theatre. Parents pretty much just wait in the centre of the room until the teacher they would like to see is free.

Having never been to a parent-teacher interview and having a couple parents that intimidate me over the phone, I am rather happy about the interviews being set up in this manner.

Anyways, are your interviews set in the traditional setting of being in your individual classroom? Or do you have something similar to how my school does it? Or do you have something completely different? How do you prepare for the interviews?

Just want some opinions. I teach Grade 6 and I need some opinions on my next Language unit.

Background: Just finished an "essay" connected to a novel study about bullying.

Option 1: start new novel study (Hoot), connect it with Biodiversity in Science. Writing focus will be persuasive essays. Novel study will continue into the new year so they'll have a 2 week break from the book.

Option 2: short story unit. Explore all elements of short stories. Writing focus will be developing ideas and writing their own short fictional narrative. Unit will be finished by the Christmas Break. Start novel study in January and have it go continuously.

I'm leaning more towards the short story unit so I can do the novel in January in it's entirety and start persuasive writing when we get back in January. Also since we just did an entire novel maybe a break with short stories.

The thing is, this job might end in the end of January and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to do Hoot as a novel study but I think I shouldn't plan for what I want to do but rather plan for my students.

Just curious about other's thoughts, although writing this has really heplped me make up my mind.
